Rain pulled her long-sleeved tee over her head and looked around the bunker. She didn’t have much, but this place had always been hers. She pulled her jeans on and then walked out of the room. When she didn’t see Hunter, she decided to head outdoors and see if he had gone out there.

As she ascended the ladder, she felt tenderness in her core from what she and Hunter had done a few hours earlier. She smiled at the feeling. She never wanted it to go away.

Rain pushed open the hatch and climbed outside. As she stood looking around, she felt a pang of melancholy as she thought about the place she’d called home for so long. It may not have been much, but it was hers. It was all she had.

“Hello, beautiful,” said Hunter as he approached Rain from behind. His hands found their way to her hips and wrapped around her torso. Rain sunk into his chest, allowing his warmth to envelope her. “How are you doing?” he asked.

“I’m okay,” Rain said. She turned in his arms so that she could face him. All he wore were his jeans, his bare chest making her crave him like a drug. “What are you doing out here?”

“I was preparing for our trip. I took us on a bit of a detour, as I’m sure you noticed.” His smile was brilliant.

Rain giggled. “I definitely did.”

Hunter’s hand snuck down Rain’s backside, giving her a squeeze and pulling her close. She could feel his arousal through his jeans. “In all honesty, I would love to stay here and waste days with you, but I don’t want my brothers to worry. I should get going.”

He pressed a kiss to her forehead and pulled back.

“Wait… you said ‘I should be going.’ Not we.” Rain thought aloud.

Hunter laughed. “You really are sharp.” He shook his head, a smile still etched on his lips. “I thought you’d want to stay here. I know you offered to go on the run to get fresh air, and frankly, that’s not something we have a lot of. I assumed you wouldn’t want to come back.”

His voice was low, steady, rehearsed, but Rain saw past that. He might have been saying those words as a statement, but it was clear as day that he was asking her a question.

“I’m going to come back with you, Hunter.” His eyebrows rose with her words. “I’m going to complete the mission with you, then I’m going to go back to HQ with you.” She smiled. “It’s not because it’s safer, even though it is. It’s not because there are other people there, even though that’s a perk. It’s because you’re there.”

Hunter put a hand on her cheek, and it made her feel like she was flying. “I was thinking,” she said, “maybe this can be our little escape. If we ever want to get out of there, get away from all the people… maybe we can come here. It can be our place.”

Hunter’s smile spread wider than she’d ever seen, and it melted her heart.
